Memorial Day 2009
National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl
Visiting a cemetery isn't really a fun experience, but it is a necessary one. Especially this weekend. As we all know, it's not a weekend of celebration or the "opening" for summer, it's a national holiday where we pay tribute to our veterans, especially those who have given their life while protecting and defending our nation. Tomorrow Hunny has duty on the ship so we spent part of today driving around Punchbowl and taking it in, listening to the Marine band.
On Thursday I spent part of my morning making leis at the school for Memorial Day weekend. It's tradition that the Boy Scouts collect leis and distribute them to every grave at Punchbowl. The whole island participates. As you can see from the pictures, it's very beautiful and solomn. The Boy Scouts collect 50,000 leis for this weekend.
