Maui, Part 1

A few weeks ago we found out that Hunny's ship was doing a family cruise to Maui in June. Being that we just got back from Big Island and the beach cabins we figured it was a no-go due to funds. Then the more we talked about it, the more we figured we'd just eat ramon noodles and wing it. So, ramon noodles it is!!!

There was one minor detail about that family cruise...you have to be 8 or above. Well, because Princess was so close, Hunny was able to take her but of course Little Man wasn't even near 8 so we had to make arrangements for us.

This is what little man and I rode!! The Hawaii Superferry!

We arrived in Kahului early in the morning and took the shuttle to the airport, rented the car, went to Krispy Kremes and Costco for essential supplies (yes, donuts are essentials!) and hit the road. It took Little Man and I about 45 mins to get to Lahaina, where our hotel was. We stayed the Pioneer Inn at the suggestion of Mrs Allbluezoo and it turned out to be perfect. It was built in 1901 and is one of the oldest (if not THE oldest) hotels in the state. It was right on the harbor, so we got to watch Hunny's big Navy ship come in and anchor in the harbor. Then all he had to do was walk right into the hotel while his shipmates figured out where they were staying, got cabs, rented cars, etc. Lucky for him, his travel agent aka ME arranged everything for him. Yes, I rock. :) LOL

The GOODS.

Friday we walked around Lahaina and ate at Cheeseburger in Paradise, just because we had to. Now, this chain is not related to Jimmy in any way, except they had their hinny's sued off by him and lost, LOL. But they got to keep their name so they sorta won too. But anyway, we went and had $10 cheeseburgers and $5 fries (the kids meals were $10 each for 2 chicken strips and fries, LMAO.) Maui is NUTS like that. EXPENSIVE! Puts O'ahu to shame, that's for sure!

A little back history here, Weds, June 11th was King Kamehameha Day (state holiday) and most of the islands had their own parades to celebrate. King Kamehameha is known for uniting the islands under one kingdom and is much loved, along with his wife, Queen Ka'ahumanu. June 7th was the parade on O'ahu and we missed it, so I was totally excited when I saw the Maui parade was going to be in Lahaina on the Sat we were there! AND we were staying right on Front Street, right on the parade route! Yippee!!! So Saturday morning we ate breakfast at the hotel and walked outside to browse the craft fair and watch the parade. Hunny shocked the daylights out of me by buying me a beautiful handcrafted pearl necklace and he also bought Princess a pretty pearl bracelet too!

After the parade we decided to hit the road. We went up past Ka'anapali and headed around west Maui. We didn't stop too many times on this drive, mostly because we were up on a one lane road on a cliff along the ocean!!! It was awesome but a little nerveracking! We did see the Nakalele blowhole. Normally we'd hike down closer but I forgot out hiking shoes and so we were only wearing crocs/flipflops and so it was a no-go. You can see the road winding along the coast by the bay in the first picture.
